Nector of the Gods in Greece



After almost three weeks in Greece, I have come to the sad realization: I will forever crave the true flavors of Greece. Greek food highlights the freshness and simleness of its ingredients, creating amazing and delicious flavors. Each region and island uses their food to exemplify their own local environment. The variation in flavors and of dishes in each area gives even more reason to experience every part of Greece!

Feta cheese - A salty, tangy, crumbly white cheese that is used as a table cheese and is included in many greek dishes like greek salad and spanikopita.

Ouzo- Known as the spirit of the greek, this strong, licorice-flavored alcohol is sugar-free, 80-proof and delicious, aka it is very effective at getting you drunk. While using it as a shot for drinking games, we were even recommended to water it down. This vodka can be found in many liquor stores and resturants.

Crete is not only the largest of the greek islands, but is also home to multiple unique variations of Greek foods.



Bougatsa- A tasty breakfast that is stuffed with myzithra cheese rather than custard like the rest of Greece. Some of the best places to try this pastry is at the cafes around the beautiful Lion Square in Heraklion including Phyllosophies and Kirkor.

Loukoumades with sesame and honey- Another deliecious pastry that can be found at Phyllosophies. This bite-sized puff balls of fried dough are served with honey, cinnamon and your choice of sesame or walnuts.

Traditional Greek coffee(ellinikos cafe)- Traditional greek coffee is a deliciously strong and creamy version of coffee that is common throughout Greece. It can be served as sweet as requested and generally comes with a cup of water and sometimes a sweet treat on the side(like the Turkish delight shown in the photo). Make sure to let the fine grounds sink to the bottom of your cup and not drink them when finishing your drink.

Raki- The people of Crete are very proud of their local drink, Raki. It is made from the byproducts of the wine making process. Raki is served for almost every occasion in Crete and is commonly served as a complementary shot after your meal, in part to help dampen the effects of it considering that it is 40-50% proof.
